Your grammar may be faultless but it is all too easy for meanings to get lost in translation. A tourist guide to Göteborg describes brick built tenements or apartment blocks as family houses of stone construction. In another document an out-of-town retail development becomes a large-scale trade establishment. Such pitfalls frequently occur when the translator is unaware of the professional culture of the subject involved. At Melica we are professionals that translate as much as professional translators.
Melica translates business and technical documents from Swedish (as well as Norwegian and Danish) into English. We also correct English language material written by non-native English speaking authors. Our translation team is made up of professional planners who are established in Sweden but have English as their first language, and we don’t just work with translation. The multi-disciplinary nature of Melica means we have an insight into many different professional fields including planning, architecture, the environment, engineering, design, management, tourism, economic development, and health and safety. We aim to convey your message in the right way to the widest possible audience.
What we set out to achieve is correct and straightforward ‘International English’. As far as possible we try to avoid British and American cultural and literary references which may confuse the reader. From experience we know that the ultimate audience is spread throughout the world, and largely made up of persons that do not have English as their mother tongue. We also like to collaborate personally with the author, and if necessary will suggest additions and deletions to convey their message in an international context. We can also assist with illustrative content. Our clients include public authorities, academic institutions and research organisations as well as private companies.
